Every so often, research comes along that confirms something you've believed for a long time.

Recently, I was reading one of the most comprehensive studies ever conducted on longevity. Researchers at Harvard followed more than 120,000 adults over several decades to better understand what contributes to a longer, healthier life. One detail that immediately caught my attention was that they estimated life expectancy beginning at age 50. I love that because it reminds us that meaningful change doesn't have an expiration date. Whether you're 35, 50, or 65, today's choices have the power to shape tomorrow.

The findings were remarkably simple.

The researchers identified five lifestyle habits that consistently led to longer, healthier lives.

Five Lifestyle Habits for a Longer, Healthier Life

1. Exercise regularly.

150 minutes or more of moderate to vigorous physical activity each week

2. Eat a high-quality, nutritious diet.

Fuel your body with nutrient-dense, whole foods most of the time. Build your plate around quality protein, vegetables, fruit, healthy fats, and minimally processed foods.  Tip: Cook at home more often.

3. Maintain a healthy body weight.

Maintain a healthy body composition that supports energy, mobility, metabolic health, and long-term vitality.

4. Don't smoke.

Duh.

5. Limit alcohol consumption.

None ideally, or limit alcohol to only occasionally so it supports, rather than compromises, your long-term health and performance.

The results were extraordinary. Women who consistently practiced these habits at age 50 gained an average of fourteen years of life expectancy, while men gained twelve.

Those numbers are impressive, but I found myself thinking less about the years themselves and more about what those years represent.

  • More opportunities to invest in your marriage.

  • More time around the dinner table with your family.

  • More wisdom shared with the next generation.

  • More chances to mentor an emerging leader.

  • More moments to pursue the dream God placed on your heart.

Longevity isn't simply about living longer. It's about increasing our capacity to fully live the life we've been entrusted with.

As I read through the study, I couldn't help but smile because it affirmed something I've been discovering for more than twenty years.

Carmen's Journey

More than twenty years ago, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.

At the time, I had no idea how much that diagnosis would shape the course of my life. Looking back now, I can honestly say it became one of my greatest teachers.

It caused me to ask questions I may never have asked otherwise.

  • How does the body heal?

  • What creates resilience?

  • Why do some people continue to flourish through adversity while others simply survive?

  • How do our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual lives work together?

Those questions became a lifelong pursuit.

Our Core Belief

Over the past two decades, I've immersed myself in learning about nutrition, movement, recovery, stress, emotional intelligence, leadership, faith, and what it truly means to flourish as a human being.

Along the way, I discovered something that eventually became one of the foundational beliefs of The Amplified Life Company:

You can only reach your dreams and goals to the level your body can take you.

When people hear that, they sometimes assume I'm talking about fitness.

I'm talking about capacity.

Our bodies carry every dream we've been given.

They carry our energy when we need to lead through uncertainty. They carry our minds as we make difficult decisions. They carry our emotional resilience through conflict, disappointment, and change. They carry our ability to be fully present with the people we love and the people we lead.

Every vision has a weight.

Whether you're building a business, leading an organization, raising a family, serving your community, or stepping into a calling that feels bigger than yourself, your body carries that vision every single day.

That is why I believe a healthy organization requires a healthy leader.

A high-performing organization requires a high-performing leader.

Today, more than twenty years after my diagnosis, I continue to coach CEOs and executive teams, speak on stages across the country, train consistently, and pursue the calling God has placed on my life. I don't share that because my story is extraordinary. I share it because I hope it reminds someone else that our circumstances do not have to define our future.

The Harvard study affirmed what I've experienced firsthand. Small, consistent choices shape our future in remarkable ways. They influence not only how long we live, but how fully we live, how well we lead, and how deeply we serve.

As leaders, we invest a tremendous amount of time developing our vision, our strategies, our businesses, and our people. Those investments matter. They create opportunities, strengthen organizations, and shape the future.

I wonder what might change if we invested with the same intentionality in the one person responsible for carrying all of it.

You.

Your body has faithfully carried you through every chapter of your life.

Perhaps today is an invitation to ask yourself one simple question.

Is the way I'm caring for my body expanding my capacity to live out the calling God has placed on my life?

I'd love to hear your thoughts. Which of the five lifestyle habits do you think has had the greatest impact on your ability to lead well?

In health, happiness, and an abundance of success,
